Is Mobile ready to Backup?

The reliability of xDSL is improving all the time, certainly when you compare it to seven or eight years ago. However because of a break in service from the ISP, a local exchange failure or a digger attack that Broadband link can still go down. At the same time reliance on Broadband as an integral part of the business processs has increased beyond all expectations.

The price of airtime has come down to the point where it can realistically act as a back up to xDSL. Moreover the rollout this year of HSDPA across the with speeds of 1.4MB per second means that functionality does not need to be diminished when or if broadband fails. There are though some things to take into consideration when looking to implement such a system.

The system needs to have an automatic Failover when broadband goes down. This is fairly common on routers but Failback when the DSL is back up and running is not. A firewall that includes a hierarchy of needs means that vital data gets through while keeping a cap on costs. Fixed IP over air through a private network means that the data keeps flowing smoothly and securely.

Quality of service. When DSL does fail you need to have confidence that your back up is there when you need it. Not all mobile networks are the same and Mobius Networks in conjunction with Vodafone has some real differentiators in network breadth, depth and focus on data.

Lastly billing needs to reflect your needs. Mobius offers its customers a data aggregation system that allows you to pool your GPRS data and use capacity where needed. This smoothes out the spikes and can keep the costs fixed month to month.
