The Mobius VPN is a proven and secure means of accessing remote devices on demand. Its ability to deliver fixed IP address’ in a cost effective manner is popular with multi-national corporations and SMEs alike.

What many people want to do though is to address the unit directly over the internet. This has a number of big advantages

• infrastructure cost is low
• access is ubiquitous
• It supports multiple user access

Some companies have a developed a model where they have full access to the remote devices through the VPN. This allows them to do the Data delivery, Retrieval, Denial of Service, Location and Diagnostics that underlines the successful Machine to Machine business model.

They then allow their end customers to access the device through the internet for information gathering- Air quality, Building Management, Plant Management or traffic flow can be made available as part of a service to those end customers who simply log on to find the information they need when they need it.

Historically this has been done by attaching a fixed public IP address to the SIM so that the remote unit sits on the internet, effectively hosting its own webpage of information. This has an advantage in that it is extremely simple to implement and is ideal for a fast demo.

However the fact that the unit sits on the public internet brings some disadvantages. Sitting on the internet means that you receive spam which is not only an inconvenience but with GPRS bears a cost that can be between 1 to 3 MB per month. Security demands that the unit carries its own firewall or you risk hostile enquiry or attack. Lastly fixed IPs are inherently expensive, particularly if you are planning a large scale rollout that may involve thousands or even hundreds of thousands of units.

With these issues in mind Mobius has developed the Secure Public Access (SPA) system. This is has all the advantages of fixed public IP address but we believe sidesteps most of the problems of a public fixed IP.

It means that the remote unit is protected by our SSL server. No spam or casual data can get through, virus and hostile attacks should be prevented. A URL based system is almost infinitely scalable since each URL has almost no intrinsic value when compared to the cost of a fixed public IP system.

Yet it still offers access from the internet to the device either for you or for your end customers. You can pick the level of access you wish. If you do not wish to allow public access our SSL servers can be made to screen not only for user name and password access but down to a specific computer.

So, because we have continued to invest in our systems and service it means that you can offer your customers a better service at a lower cost.
